Sunday 1st October, the sun is shining and 50,000 are lined up for the 2006 Great North Run.
In amongst those 50,000 are 8 Sun City Triathlon members (sorry if I have missed you out please inform me and I will include your name) Chris, Rob, Clive, John, Mark, Tony, Steve and Me all lined up to challenge the 13.1 mile between Newcastle and South Shields and in the words of Mark “This is all up hill.”
The weather conditions were perfect: hot and sunny (I managed to top the old sun tan up). This was my 16 GNRun the first being the second year of running 25 years ago!!!. Yes I am really that old.
Well it was back to the good old days, the weather conditions for October were great, very little wind (well weather wise anyway) the metro’s were crammed full to bursting point full of athletes and supporters going to the start.
The gun went of the crowds started clamping and cheering. The oggiy-oggiy-oy sounded through the tunnels which of course is the tradition.
There must have been at least 10 bands along the way with music ranging from oil drums, pan pipes to full on heavy rock, but what made it for me was the people who cheered, clamped, handed out sweets, ice pops oranges and water throughout the whole13.1 mile just like in the old days 20+ years ago. This had been missing over that later years but was back bigger and better than before.
Well done everyone the club was well represented both running and spectators thanks for all the support lets top double figures next year.
