Seeing as Mandy wasn't racing this year we sent our next secret weapon to steal back the title of OUR race!  Well done Tom Doughty on an emphatic victory and also on smashing the course record.

Blessed again by great weather the 2nd running of the Sun City Triathlon turned out to be another fantastic race.  The lighter winds gave smoother swim conditions and bright early morning sunshine contributed to perfect racing conditions.

SWIM. 750m

The preceding month of record tempretures did nothing to warm the water and ice-cream heads were the order of the day until at least the first turn.  A lead pack soon formed with Sun City featuring strongly.  Tony Weed of Hartlepool Tri lead the way out in 11.31 with our own Matthew Ellam snapping at his heels, posting the same time.  Tom Doughty, Sun City's pre race favorite was 12secs behind in 3rd place.

BIKE 20k

The 3 lap bike course is deceptivly tough with a sneaky hill in the 1st 2k which can put you into oxygen debt following so soon after the swim.  The order soon changed as the stronger bikers came through with Weed and Matthew falling off the pace to be replaced by Tony Dixon (Hartlepool Tri) and Roger Godley (Cleveland BikeTraks).  Tom Doughty hung onto the lead group and thats how things stood on entering transition with Dixon posting fastest bike in 25.42, Godley 2nd in 26.08 and Tom solid in 3rd at 26.10.

RUN 5k

Knowing Tom's running prowress, the others in the lead group must have been worried.  They had cause to be!  Into the run along the scenic Seaburn and Roker coastline, Tom powered away with a stunning demonstration of tri-running.  Leaving all in his wake Tom blitzed the opposition and putting in a run of 17.15 to take the final victory and smashing the course record in a time of 55.08.

Almost 2mins later Dixon came in to take 2nd with Godley 35secs later clinching 3rd.  Tony dixon graciously congratulted Tom on his victory with the word "Tom, your on a different planet"  And so it seemed.  Well done Tom on a fantastic days racing.
